Tenshi no Mon is super excited to have a piece today submitted by DoA user Chobittum. She’s done all the hard work to gather the most amazing images and information on the Volks x Disney 23 Collaboration dolls- which is truly amazing! Thank you so much for all of your work ❤
What is D23 and why is Volks designing such special dolls for these events? D23 first came into being in 2009 and was introduced by then CEO Bob Iger:
D23 (full name D23: The Official Disney Fan Club) is the official fan club for The Walt Disney Company. Founded in 2009, the organization is known mainly for its biennial exposition event, the D23 Expo. The name D23 refers to Dfor Disney and 23 for 1923—the year Walt Disney founded the company.(Wikipedia)
Basically D23 is biannual celebration/convention of everything Disney with an emphasis on historically valuable items and collectables. If you would like more information about the US membership to D23 then please check it out!
Since the beginning of the D23 event in Japan in 2013, it has become a very popular event. It’s popularity in Japan is not surprising as there is a particular fondness of LE items and collectables and D23 is the perfect place to find any and all things Disney. This includes some of the most beautiful Super Dollfies ever imagined. I would much, much, much rather go to D23 Japan than the US counterpart. I mean… just check out the website. It’s extremely impressive!
Every two years for D23 Volks Inc has contributed a special One-Off of a particular Disney character that is available for auction on YJ!. Each of these dolls have been selected by Volks Artists to embody the spirit of the character in sculpt, painstakingly accurate face-up, skin tone, and eyes. They are then dressed in meticulously recreated outfits specially tailored for each doll. These dolls sell for hundreds of thousands yen (thousands of USD). Though these dolls are specifically sold during D23 in Japan, they are sold on YJ! at auction- if you want to bid using a proxy and have 10k to spend then it’s possible!
Let’s take a stroll down memory land and check out some of the exquisite past releases for D23:
For the very first D23 in 2013 Volks recreated Jack Skellington as a SD17 with the Reisner sculpt. I was both shocked and amazed that Volks Inc tackled such a difficult character immediately for their first D23. I wouldn’t have believed it could be convincingly done- but they did it. it is particularly successful for me due to his mask, giving the SD17 body the long, lean look of Jack Skellington. Remove the mask and you have one of the most gorgeous SD17s I’ve ever seen. He sold easily for over USD $20,000 at auction. Where is this person’s instagram? I need to follow it!
The same year Volks also created an amazing version of sweet Rapunzel. This is SDGr Lieselotte as Rapunzel! I had never seen Liesellotte on SDGr before but she looks absolutely gorgeous! The detailing in her gown is spectacular from the bodice to the petticoat. She is wearing her iconic gorgeous honey-gold braid with silk flowers woven throughout. I believe for a Volks interpretation of Rapunzel, they’ve definitely left the “defiant” aspect of her personality aside and have really focused on the her sweet, gentle feminine beauty. I can’t complain! (watch out! She still has her frying pan!) She sold at auction for USD $7,000.
Fast-forward to 2015 when Volks Inc decided to do a celebration of Cinderella with a very special doll. This is an SDGr Belle in PureSkin White. She’s very unique as the Belle sculpt has never been available in that skin tone before (and likely won’t be again). This doll. I can’t even. She is one of those Super Dollfies I would yearn to see in person.
Volks took inspiration for her outfit and from both the cartoon and movie, with her black ribbon choker and beautiful butterfly touches to her slippers. The beading on the dress skirts and bodice are particularly impressive as are the elaborate gem earrings and enclosure at the back. She was the only Super Dollfie sold her year and her auction ended at over USD $10,000.
Here we are at present day and we, amazingly, have 2 gorgeous Super Dollfies to droll over for D23 2018: SDGr Ariel and SD16 Belle!
Ariel is embodied by SDGr and the Jun Tachibana sculpt. It was an interesting choice for Ariel but I also think it worked very nicely! She’s very cute, happy and energetic- she encapsulates Ariel’s enthusiasm perfectly. Her face-up is beautifully captured by Volks artist Ciera. I adore all of her outfits (she comes with both her mermaid tail and dress!). Nothing is overdone, she’s just perfectly Ariel. I especially love that she is combing her hair with a fork. Can we even talk about those bangs? They are perfect for Ariel but daaaaaaaaaang 1992, girl! Work it!
Finally, we have Japan’s SD16 sweetheart Ami Ayase masquerading as Belle. She is a very popular SD16 in Japan and, apparently, makes a super gorgeous version of Belle. She has a very happy, lovely face-up that is slightly on the heavier side, however, I really believe in her expression and the light in her face. There’s so much beautiful emotion there- I think it’s one of the best ’emotive’ face-up’s I have ever seen! It’s not particularly shocking that she was also painted by Volks artist Ciera. ❤
Belle’s ballgown, which is from the most epic scene in the animated feature film, is also beautifully executed in shades of gold and yellow with accompanying rosettes on both gown and shoes.
Special Thanks, again, to Chobittum for all of her hard work gathering this information and images! If you’d like to see more please visit her instagram page and follow her for more Super Dollfie goodness!
